THE CITY OF ROME

Rome can be found on the banks of the River Tiber in Italy. It is located 6 miles from the coast, at the point where the river gets too shallow for boats to sail any further up the river. If you look at a map of the empire, you will see that it is also located in the middle of Italy, and was perfectly placed to expand both north and south.

The Romans believed that the twins Romulus and Remus founded Rome. These two boys were left to die by the River Tiber, but were rescued by a wolf. When they grew up, they decided to build a city on the 7 hills surrounding the spot where they were found. They marked out the boundary with a plough, but when Remus made fun of the ceremony by jumping over the furrow, they argued and Romulus killed his brother. This is why the city is named after him.

It is just a story. We don't know who really founded Rome, but it was likely to be the Etruscans, who ruled Rome until 510BC. At this time, the Romans threw out the Etruscan kings. When the Etruscans tried to retake the city by force, the hero Horatius stopped them from entering the city while the bridge was chopped down behind him. His action saved Rome and allowed it to become a republic.

LA CITTA' DI ROMA

Roma fu fondata sulle rive dei fiume Tevere in Italia. E' situata a sei miglia di distanza dalla costa, nel punto dove il fiume è poco profondo per consentire la navigazione. Se si osserva la cartina dell'impero, si noterà che Roma è posta nel centro dell'Italia ed è situata in un posto geograficamente strategico che favori il suo sviluppo. I Romani credevano che i gemelli Romolo e Remo avessero fondato Roma.

Questi due neonati erano stati lasciati a morire sul fiume Tevere, ma furono salvati e poi allattati da una lupa. Quando divennero adulti decisero di fondare una città sulla settima collina vicino al luogo dove erano stati trovati. Essi tracciarono il confine con un aratro, ma quando Remo saltò al di là del solco, tra i due scoppiò una lite e Romolo uccise suo fratello.

Da Romolo la città fu chiamata Roma. Non si sa chi realmente abbia fondato la città dì Roma, ma certo è che ,tutto ciò che sappiamo, fa parte solo di una leggenda, perché pare che siano stati gli Etruschi, i quali avevano dominato Roma fino al 510 A.C. ,a fondare la città.

In quel periodo i Romani respinsero gli Etruschi. Quando gli Etruschi provarono a conquistare la città con la violenza, l'eroe Orazio Coclite li fermò all'entrata della città mentre il ponte veniva abbattuto dietro di lui. Quest'azione salvò Roma e le permise di diventare una Repubblica.
