Found in a dustbin near a mosque on the outskirts of the Spanish capital - a videotape, purporting to come from al Qaeda, in which the Islamic militant group claims responsibility for Thursday's train bombings. A TV station had been told where the tape could be found. Spain's interior minister Angel Acebes announced the news overnight. On the tape a man said al Qaeda had carried out the attacks in retaliation for Spanish co-operation with the US and its allies. "This claim has been made by a man speaking in Arabic with a Moroccan accent," said Acebes. "The man claims to be the spokesman for the al Qaeda group in Europe - Abu Dujan al Afgani." Acebes said the name was not known to intelligence services and that investigators were examining the tape's authenticity. The tape warned that more blood would flow if Spain did not stop what it described as its injustices. ITALIAN
La rivendicazione di Al Qaida
E' stata trovata alla periferia di Madrid nei pressi di una moschea in un cestino della spazzatura simile a questo la videocassetta con la rivendicazione degli attentati. Il testo del video di due minuti e' stato reso noto, in una conferenza stampa la notte scorsa dal ministro dell' interno spagnolo, Angel Acebes. Al termine dell'incontro Acebes ne ha consegnato una trascrizione ai cronisti: "La rivendicazione è stata fatta da una persona che ha parlato in arabo con un forte accento marocchino che afferma di essere il responsabile militare di Al Qaida in Europa, Abu Dujam Al Afgani". L'uomo afferma che la Spagna e' stata colpita per la sua collaborazione con gli Stati Uniti nella guerra in Iraq e in Afghanistan e preannuncia altri possibili attentati. The bombings are being called Europe's 11 September, so was the same group - al-Qaeda - behind them? That theory is boosted by the discovery of a white van near the town of Alcala de Henares. Three of the four bombed trains had come from there. Inside that stolen van police found seven detonators and a cassette tape of verses from the Koran. In addition a letter apparently from a group aligned to al-Qaeda was sent to an London based Arabic newspaper claiming responsibility. An American official said the group - the Abu Hafs al-Masri Brigades - had made numerous false claims in the past and it is not clear exactly what their link is to al-Qaeda. Terrorism expert Jean Chalvidant, who has studied the Basque terror group ETA, has his own opinion. He said: ""This is such a bloody and terrible attack .. it is not Eta's style at all ... it much more fits how Al-Qaeda operates. There is also a Spanish link to the September the 11th attacks in America. Mohamed Atta, who was the architect of the plane hijackings, passed through Spain, which was used as an operational base by al Qaeda. After September 11th Spanish police arrested and questioned 63 alleged members of Al Qaeda. They also found that the group's banker had moved funds through Spain.

Il colpo di scena ieri sera quando il furgone è stato ritrovato parcheggiato ad Alcala de Henares, stazione di partenza dei treni saltati in aria. Dentro c'erano sette detonatori e un'audiocassetta con incisi versetti del corano. Qualche ora dopo al giornale in lingua araba Al-Quds al Arabi pubblicato a Londra la rivendicazione. Le brigate Abu Hafs al-Masri, una cellula appartenente alla rete terroristica di Osama bin Laden, si sono attribuite la responsabilità della strage. Rivendicazione attendibile per il criminologo Jean Chalvidand. "L'Eta avvisa sempre quando compie un attentato e questa volta non c'è stata nessuna telefonata per informare delle esplosioni. Per la dinamica, per il modus operandi questo è tutto tranne che un attentato dell'Eta". Chi crede nella responsabilità di Al Qaida ricorda come Mohamed Atta, uno dei kamikaze dell'11 settembre, abbia organizzato proprio in Spagna una parte del piano alle Torri gemelle. E sempre in Spagna 63 presunti terroristi appartenenti alla rete di bin Laden sono stati arrestati negli ultimi due anni e mezzo. Il governo Aznar ha appoggiato senza esitazioni la guerra in Iraq. Terrorism fears have prompted delays and stringent checks on transatlantic flights. A British Airways plane landed in Washington after apparently picking up an escort of fighter aircraft as soon as it entered American airspace. Passengers were interrogated at length and the plane was searched by federal agents. An afternoon flight from London to Washington was cancelled on Friday for the second day in a row. And jitters mounted when BA called off a service from London to the Saudi capital Riyadh, scheduled for Saturday afternoon. Meanwhile, it has emerged that Air France's grounding of three transatlantic flights over Christmas was a mistake based on information from the FBI. But French interior minister Nicolas Sarkozy warned against complacency, saying terrorism was a "cloud of international proportions" which warranted cooperation from the international community. Elsewhere, two Aeromexico flights to Los Angeles were cancelled this week and US security experts are scrutinising anti-terrorism measures at Mexico City airport. Il rischio attentati moltiplica i controlli e le cancellazioni di voli internazionali. British Airways, per il secondo giorno consecutivo, ha annullato il collegamento pomeridiano Londra-Washington. Un solo aereo della compagnia di bandiera britannica è riuscito ad atterrare venerdí nella capitale statunitense, ma con due ore di ritardo e scortato, sembra, da un caccia americano. Sabato non si volerà, per "motivi di sicurezza", neppure tra Londra e Ryad. Secondo indiscrezioni, Al Qaeda sarebbe stata pronta a ripetere lo schema degli attentati dell'11 settembre su Washington utilizzando proprio un aereo britannico. Informazioni che fanno aumentare, insieme al livello di attenzione, anche il nervosismo: sotto le feste sono saltati cinque voli tra il Messico e gli Stati Uniti e sei tra Parigi e Los Angeles, oltre a quelli della British Airways. Il governo francese ha rivelato anche che alcuni dei voli sono stati cancellati sulla base di banali errori negli elenchi dei presunti membri di Al Qaeda forniti dall'Fbi. After months of feuding between the two architects involved, the design for the new building which will stand on the site of the World Trade Centre has been unveiled. Freedom Tower will be the world's tallest structure, standing 541 metres. It will include 72 storeys of office space and be topped by a gigantic spire. But even before work begins on the site the building is already a source of controversy. Daniel Libeskind was the architect chosen by the agency in charge of redeveloping Lower Manhattan. His colleague was David Childs, appointed by the leaseholder of the area. Their efforts to reach a compromise over the design were described as contentious. There is no doubt the end product is innovative - among its features will be turbines intended to catch the Manhatten wind. But some relatives of September 11th victims believe
the Twin Towers site should be treated as a mass grave and left vacant.

New York apre il sipario sulla Freedom Tower, il grattacielo che sorgerà sull'area dove si trovava il World Trade Center, distrutto dall'attacco terrorista dell'11 settembre 2001.Il modello è stato presentato nel corso di una cerimonia alla Federal Hall di New York, l'edificio dove George Washington giurò come primo presidente degli Stati Uniti. Si richiama alla storia americana anche l'altezza della torre 1776 piedi (541 metri) in onore dell'anno della dichiarazione di indipendenza.La Freedom Tower, destinata ad essere il grattacielo più alto del mondo, sarà una sorta di gigantesca versione della Statua della Libertà, a cui si ispira il profilo.Fino al settantaduesimo piano ospiterà uffici e attività commerciali, mentre la parte superiore sarà costituita da un struttura contenente turbine a vento in grado di produrre energia eolica. A completare la costruzione un'antenna televisiva.Saranno necessari dieci anni e un investimento di dodici miliardi di lavori per edificare la Freedom Tower; i lavori dovrebbero prendere il via alla fine dell'agosto 2004. E' ancora da assegnare, invece, l'appalto per la costruzione del monumento che dovrà ricordare le oltre 2700 vittime del World Trade Center. La scelta fra gli otto progetti è stata posticipata a gennaio.
