La guerra in Palestina e le speranze di pace

Molte sono state le dichiarazioni dei leader politici del mondo l’indomani della morte di Arafat
Secondo Ariel Sharon la morte di Arafat potrebbe rappresentare una svolta per il Medioriente se i nuovi leader palestinesi dichiarassero guerra al terrorismo e ha aggiunto: "Continueranno gli sforzi per trovare un accordo politico con i palestinesi, il piú rapidamente possibile".
Il Medioriente e la morte del leader palestinese Yasser Arafat sono stati temi centrali anche dell'incontro a Washington fra il presidente americano George Bush e il premier Tony blair. Il britannico è il primo leader mondiale a incontrare Bush dopo la vittoria elettorale che lo ha riconfermato per un altro quadriennio alla guida dell'amministrazione statunitense. Bush intende usare questo tempo per "mettere a frutto" in Medioriente il peso politico degli Stati Uniti, per realizzare la visione di due Stati, uno israeliano e uno palestinese, vicini e in pace.
Mentre la tomba di Arafat diventa luogo di pellegrinaggio la diplomazia americana per il Medio Oriente entra subito nel vivo. Colin Powell intende incontrare i nuovi leader palestinesi ad interim. La data piu' probabile sembra essere il 22 - 23 novembre a Sharm El-Sheikh.
Nel giorno dell'ultimo addio al Rais Rawhi Fattuh, presidente ad interim dell'Autorità Palestinese, ha annunciato ufficialmente la convocazione di elezioni generali entro 60 giorni. A questo proposito la dirigenza palestinese ha invitato Israele a ritirarsi da Gaza e Cisgiordania per poter tenere libere elezioni.
. Il presidente statunitense George W. Bush e il premier britannico Tony Blair da Washington si sono detti determinati a far ripartire la "road map" rimasta finora lettera morta. Bush ha affermato di considerarla la priorità del suo secondo mandato.

Tra le visite ufficiali anche Javier Solana, alto Rappresentante per la politica estera e la sicurezza dell'Unione Europea. In sua presenza il premier Ahmed Qorei ha comunicato alla stampa che le elezioni presidenziali avverranno entro il 9 gennaio. Ai nuovi dirigenti ad interim Javier Solana : " la cosa piu' importante - ha ricordato - è trasformare il sogno in realtà, il sogno fondamentale dei Palestinesi è avere una nazione, per questo dobbiamo lavorare con loro per realizzare questo sogno"

The latest events could herald historic turning point in the Middle East- that was the message from Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon following the death of Yasser Arafat. Speaking to reporters at his office, Sharon said Israel would continue its efforts to reach a political settlement with the Palestinians. But he added that a breakthrough would depend first and foremost on a cessation of terrorism.
EU's foreign policy chief, Javer Solana, who met Qurie and other Palestinian leaders shortly after Arafat's burial.
The Middle East was top of the agenda when British Prime Minister Tony Blair and American President George W Bush spoke earlier. Blair is the first world leader to visit since Bush was re-elected last week. Bush expressed his desire to see long-lasting peace in the Middle East and emphasised the necessity of a two-state solution: "Prime Minister Blair and I share a vision of a free, peaceful, democratic broader Middle East. That vision must include a just and peaceful resolution to the Arab Israeli conflict based on two democratic states, Israel and Palestine living side by side in peace and security.

Bush said lasting peace was possible within the next four years but refused to make it a commitment of his second term
US Secretary of State Colin Powell has said he hopes to meet Palestinian leaders soon as a part of a fresh diplomatic initiative.
He will be in Egypt in November 22 for a two day summit and White House officials have indicated he could meet the current and former Palestinian prime ministers, Ahmed Qurie and Mahmoud Abbas there, or even travel to the Palestinian territories

After the encounter Solana pledged the EU would offer assistance to the Palestinian Authority in elections to find a successor to the late President.
They have been provisionally marked down for January 9.
Among the world diplomats paying their respects was Javier Solana the EU's foreign policy chief.

He had talks with Palestinian leaders now sharing the burden of Arafat's presidential responsibilities.

"The sentiment we have is the sentiment of solidarity with the Palestinian people. The most important thing that we can ask is to make the dream become a reality and the fundamental dream is to have a state, and for that we have to work with the Palestinian people to make it a reality," he said.
